Let’s kick this off with a bang shall we?! Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros has taken the world by storm, and for good reason. The first in the Empyrean series, this instalment follows Violet Sorrengail as she enters the Dragon Rider’s quadrant at Basgiath War college, despite her wishes to join the scribes instead. Following in the footsteps of her mother, sister and late brother, she must overcome challenges, adversity, all while trying to not get killed in the process. Easier said than done when Xaden Riorson is her wing leader. Will Violet get through unscathed?
First and foremost, WOW! I absolutely loved this book from start to finish. The character development was fantastic, as was the world building. The story as a whole was really well fleshed out, and it didn’t feel like it was dragging at any point. Conceptually it was a really interesting read, and it didn’t feel similar to other stories of a similar vein. I loved watching Violet and Xaden’s relationship grow, as well as her relationships with her friends, and her dragons after threshing. Watching Violet go from strength to strength was really emotive, as a reader I couldn’t help but celebrate her wins and mourn her losses with her.
Overall, I’d give Fourth Wing 5 stars, I’m really excited to crack on with the rest of the Empyrean series and see where the journey takes me.
